  1. Open Water Swim, Picnic, and Tri Camp this Weekend: July 17-18, 2010

Posted July 14th, 2010 by Ken Sharlin - This entry has been tagged with: biking, club social event, Open water swimming, running, Triathlon

The 2011 Ozarks Multisport Club Open Water Swim and Picnic takes place at Moonshine Beach on Saturday, July 17, 2010. We have rented the Pavillion at Moonshine Beach, so bring the whole family. This event was a huge success last year.

Burgers, dogs, snacks, and beverages will be served! The event will begin promptly at 12:00 pm. We'll start heating up the coals about 12:30 pm, and have the drinks and snacks out. At the same time we'll have a brief dry land clinic about open water swimming for those of you who are new to this part of triathlon, and then a group swim. If you wish to wear a wetsuit just for the practice, feel free. The water will be warm. We will talk about getting in and out of your wetsuit. We'll have a couple of kayakers keeping an eye on the swimmers, but we stay close to the beach, just on the outside of the buoys that define the swim area. By the time we finish out swim, between 1:00 and 1:30 pm the burgers will be flippin' and the hot dogs a 'rollin. Expect the picnic to go on for another hour and a half, or so, and enjoy the beach area. I would expect the festivities to wrap up around 3-3:30 pm. The picnic and open water swim will dovetail our mini tri camp.

by Joe Friel (Original article found at http://joefriel.typepad.com/blog/)

I offer training plans to cyclists, triathletes and runners through TrainingPeaks.com. While I describe in most of my books how to set one's training zones, I still get lots of questions about how to do it from those who are new to my plans. So rather than answering all of those emails I will just point athletes to this post from now on. Even if you don't have any intentions to use a plan of mine, this may help you get your trining zone set up effectively.

  4. Duathlon Series to Begin May 18th

Posted May 9th, 2010 by Ken Sharlin - This entry has been tagged with: bicyling, Concreteman, duathlon, Fellows Lake, racing, running

May 18th marks the first of four in a weekly series at Fellows Lake in north of Springfield. The Duathlon Series, or Du Series as it is known, has been a tradition for well over a decade, originally started by world champion duathlete Diane Hood and her husband, Ken Hood. The Duathlon Series was taken over by Ozarks Multisport Club a few years ago, and the tradition continues. This is a terrific way to get a high intensity work out done on a Tuesday evening, see friends, and practice the bike course used on the annual Concreteman Triathlon in July, Springfield's oldest open water triathlon.

  5. Am I Drinking Too Much??? Hydration and the Triathlete

Posted May 5th, 2010 by Ken Sharlin - This entry has been tagged with: hydration, hyponatremia, training, Triathlon

I have been hearing a lot of talk about hydration and training/racing. Have you ever been told "Don't forget to drink lots of water...say hydrated!" I feel like this needs some clarification. In reality, dehydration is not the major risk in competition. This is particularly true if the athlete follows one simple golden rule: Drink When Thirsty. In fact, the real risk is over-hydration, one contributing factor to the problem of hyponatremia or low serum sodium. Several good studies have been published on the subject of hydration in triathlon which have clearly demonstrated that forced hydration is detrimental to performance and, potentially, to the health of the athlete.

Here is Joe Friel on this subject (please note the numerous references at the bottom of each part of the article).
