Concreteman Race Review
What began as mild morning in the Ozarks, once again turned into some swealtering heat. But what can you expect for a late July race in the Springfield area. This annual event is a real treat in our own backyard, but this year we had an added twist. A long swim. What visually looked a bit longer than the 500 meter course we were to swim 3 times, it became aparent after my first loop that it was closer to 1000.
After we completed the 3000 meter swim, we transitioned onto the bike course. This is my first year on the new bike course that includes KK, and I will say that I was pleasantly suprised. Road conditions were good and the traffic was low. I also appreciated uniformed traffic control at some key blind turns. My only dissapointment with the bike was the lack of volunteers and signage along one of the turns. I heard of at least 2 competitors that missed this particular turn.
The run was well staffed with aid stations every mile, and was treated with a wet towel that was as cool as the water. Well done here. Once we arrived at the finish line we were treated with cold water, soda, and some other treats that was comforting on such a hot day.
Although the awards cerimony was not as formal as other races, we were rewarded with gear as opposed to medals, a nice change.
Overall the race has had several improvements since the first time I have done it, but was overshadowed by the swim issue. Having some time to think about this event, I was very happy that everyone stayed safe and glad to see some people learn that they can swim longer then they ever imagined in open water. It was a real confidence booster.
Some of you are wondering what happened. I communicated with Mary with Ridge Runner Sports and got this in return:
"Our usual surveyor that helps us set the buoys was out of town. The wrong coordinates were used. Until that first group got going, we were not suspicious and not much could be done.
In 28 yrs., this has not happened we apologize.
We appreciate everyone who showed up."
