OMC News and Updates

Twitter for Your Thoughts

Posted October 12th, 2009 by Ken Sharlin - This entry has been tagged with: bike ride, run, socialize, tweets, Twitter

Are you going for a run and looking for running partners? Do you need to carpool to a race tomorrow and want to know if anyone else is going? Are you in the mood for some Galloway Station fries and a tall, cold one and want to invite other OMC members? Now there is a way to communicate easily and efficiently. Web service Twitter has been linked to www.go-omc.com

Here's how it works. Twitter users post "tweets" which are short text messages to interested subscribers or "followers" of that particular Twitter user. Everyone on that follower list will be notified by text messaging when the particular twitter user they are following sends out a tweet. You can receive tweets on your computer and on your mobile phone. Twitter user i.d.'s are created when you sign up for Twitter, but always begin with the "@" symbol. Ozarks Multisport Club has a Twitter account that is "@OMCtweets. OMC members who want to participate in this exciting way to hear about club events and communicate with other club members through Twitter need to sign up for their own Twitter accounts at www.twitter.com, and they need to add @OMCtweets to their list of Twitterers they are following. It's all pretty self-explanatory if you go to the Twitter website. However, there are a couple of extra steps. ***Members will then need to notify a club officer such as myself, Eric Johnson, Jeff Del Vecchio, David Settle or David Smay that they wish to be added to the "white list" and we will need to know your Twitter i.d. Once you are on the white list, send out tweets as you normally would, but add the symbol #omc to your message. #omc is a "hashtag" and this allows your tweet to be picked up by @OMCtweets and then boomeranged out to all followers of @OMCtweets. For example, my Twitter i.d. is @ken_sharlin and I want to invite members to bike 25 miles on Sunday leaving from the Evans Road Church out Highway 186 in Rogersville. So, I will send out a tweet that says: "#omc Going for a short Sunday afternoon ride, about 25 miles, meet at Evans Road Church at 1 pm, all welcome." It's that simple. In summary:

  1. Sign up for a Twitter account at www.twitter.com (free) and configure your account to your own preference, in particular, whether you want to receive tweets on your phone.

  2. Become a #OMCtweets follower and notify a club officer that you wish to be on our Twitter white list. Make sure you include your Twitter i.d. in your white list request.

  3. Communicate with other club members by sending out your tweets using the hashtag #omc added to your message.

Hope you are enjoying our new website and all of its cutting edge features. New features are being added, so stay tuned.
