Why not tri?
There are lots of reasons not to try triathlon, but the most important reason to say ‘yes’ and give it a try is you. First things first, the main competition in triathlon is you, not your friends, nor other competitors. Triathlon is famous for the motto, “just finish,” or making your own “PR.”
Triathlon is about a community of support, cheering you on. I cannot tell you how many times have I been on the run when someone passes me and says, “good job, keep it up.” Really, you’ve got nothing to lose by giving triathlon a try. To the contrary you’ve got everything to gain: fun, fitness, a personal sense of accomplishment, feeling good, and maybe even shedding a few unneeded pounds.
So, what do you need to get started? It is not necessary to go and spend lots of money to begin the triathlon lifestyle. Eventually, you may want to buy that fancy tri bike or wetsuit, but dispense with those concerns for now. Make sure you have a basic swim suit intended for swim training, goggles, a swim cap (if you have long hair), a bike in good working order (any bike will do) equipped with a basic cycle computer, a helmet, and a reliable pair of running shoes. As you get close to race day you will want to pick up a race belt, but don’t worry about that for now.
Next, you need a training plan. Lots of free plans are available by search engine on the internet. Make sure you specify “sprint distance” unless you are very ambitious for your first event. This consists of a 300-500 meter swim, 12-14 mile bike, and 3.1 mile run (5K). I recommend that you find a sprint race in your area that is at least 8 weeks away and sign up for it now. This way you are working toward a specific goal.
You will need access to a pool. In Springfield, MO, the main swimming pools are at the YMCA branches, Cox Fitness Center, Chesterfield Village, and Drury University. Once you have made a commitment to your first race, identified a training plan that works for you, and found a pool for your swim workouts, the rest is easy.
If you are reading this article chances are you are a member of Ozarks Multisport Club, or you are considering membership. In that case, come to the meetings and feel free to contact officers in the club. We all have experience in triathlon and like to help those new to the sport. Our monthly meetings serve as a great resource for triathletes in training. Read the newsletters. They will keep you up to date on club events, training, and racing opportunities. Make use of our website: features like twitter allow you to find friends heading out for a run or a bike ride, or maybe heading out to the lake for a swim.
Again, welcome to the multisport lifestyle. Take a deep breath, put one foot in the water, and give it a tri!
